I’m Mike Marjama. I'm a habitual failure, extreme optimist and constant work in progress (okay hopeless romantic should have been in there too). I'm also a former Major League Baseball player, self proclaimed recovered champion triathlete of Mental Illness (eating disorders, depression and anxiety), speaker, aspiring author and one hell of a hot mess most of the time.
This website is a reflection of my “WHY.” I love to learn about maximizing our lives and what it means to live the ever elusive “good life.” Every day, I am on a journey to not only actualize the meaning and purpose of my life, but help others actualize theirs. I believe in a world of blurred understanding, it is my mission to “Unmask” a life worth living.
In order to answer that question, I try to use my nerdy obsessions for science, history and philosophy and explain (lets admit a bunch of words we have no idea what they mean) in a way that everyday folks can easily understand and actually use in their lives daily. As I attempt to Unmask a life worthy of living, I like to tell stories and share the stories of athletes, artists, entrepreneurs but more importantly everyday people. By analyzing the stories of impactful individuals, teams and communities from many different fields of understanding, we can start to identify the common characteristics that lead to lives that create impact.
In order to help foster self-awareness in others, I often offer tricks, hacks or as I like to call them ‘golden nuggets’ to implement in their everyday lives. An example is below: (yes just read it.. that is all.. profound implications are tangible if you just carry that thought around all day)
I believe we are the ultimate adaptation machine. We have the freedom to choose our course, and ultimately change the world. In order to change the world, it must start from within YOU! As momma preached to me in my younger days (well i’m still single so who am I kidding, she still does) “you cant love until you first love yourself.” Yea never took that advice but Lord is that true. If I can help you maximize your life and mission, then you can be the catalyst for others. You'll be the source of growth in the world. You will add energy rather than subtract it.
I am the offspring of a NP OB/GYN and a high school Earth Science Teacher (I know you’re thinking hmm women’s parts and rocks.. This guy has crazy good genes). I am literally the child of education and science. Therefore, I am on a scientific exploration to answer the question, “how can I live better.” The scientific nerd in me wants to examine the root causes of my behavior and what the hell is actually going on inside my brain and body according to science to make me do the dumb stuff I do. The education nerd wants to figure out how to teach others about these gold nuggets so they can be applied into daily practice when people like me do dumb stuff (or even better, avoid dumb stuff).
Accordingly, I can’t just write of talk about it! In the words of whoever “don’t talk about it, be about it.” So thanks to whoever said that, I experiment. As I experiment with creating and implementing better habits daily I try things out for myself and largely on myself. By doing so, my mission becomes parts researcher and experimenter and eventually into parts storyteller and educator. In the end, it is about sharing inspiring stories, realistic implementation techniques and adding tools to your tool-belt as you arm yourself for life’s challenges. Through life’s journey you will gain the hard-earned wisdom only available to those who have lived a life full of purpose and meaning.
The primary place that I share this information is through my active social media accounts. Thousands of people view and interact with my posts every day. You can follow along and interact with our community daily. Again, encouraging people to share their ‘golden nuggets’ and stories that provide others with techniques to live a a purpose and meaning filled life. Nothing annoying or unexpected (okay maybe a few random things to have some fun).
I DO NOT have all the answers and as I mentioned previously, I am a constant work in progress. I still have a lot to learn but the true value in life comes from being able to share what we have learned along the way. If you're ready to learn what the hell these “golden nuggets”are this random guy keeps rambling about or just a dose of real talk (and entertainment of course) enter your email address below and click “Subscribe!”
